The 2011 Conference website is now available to the public and can be accessed at http://www.gnsi.science-art.com/2011WA/index.html. Specific programming and activity details will be forthcoming as the planning committees work to finalize events. There is still room in the conference schedule if you would like to share your unique techniques, skills, or experiences with fellow GNSI members. Be creative, be bold, share what you know!
ALSO: We need a Newsletter Coordinator and volunteers to help with organizing exhibits and workshops. Please contact Audrey for more information.
Auction Donations Needed! GNSI’s annual fundraising auction is coming, and we need more donations. Take a look around your studios, office and homes for artwork, art supplies, books, apparel, gizmos and gadgets that would be fun to find at a silent or live auction. Donations need not be related to art. They can be new or used items, silly, or sublime. Items may be delivered in person during the conference, or sent ahead of time to Natalie Concillo, nmarie27@gmail.com, 204 W 4th Ave. Apt. 213, Olympia, WA 98501 (971) 998-4716.
National Annual Business Meeting: The Annual Business Meeting will be held Wednesday, July 13th, 11:30 am – 1pm, and includes lunch for registered conference attendees. National GNSI members will have the opportunity to vote on upcoming board leadership and receive news and reports affecting us. Even if you are not able to attend the entire conference, please consider registering for a single day on Wednesday, July 13, to have a voice in shaping the future of our organization.
Annual Banquet and Awards, a special event with Kéet Shuká: An Indigenous Tribute to Killer Whales. The GNSI Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony is going to be a lovely event held at The Evergreen State College’s (TESC) Long House, or “House of Welcome”, Wednesday evening, July 13 at 6 p.m. Advance tickets are required and include dinner, $45 per person.
According to TESC, “the Longhouse was built in collaboration with Northwest tribes. It is the first building of its kind on a public campus in the United States. Founded upon a vision of hospitality and service, it is a gathering place for people of all cultural backgrounds to teach and learn with each other.” In this spirit, we are pleased to announce special guests, Odin Lonning and Ann Stateler, who will be sharing their traditional culture, art, stories, and their science through the evening’s presentation, Kéet Shuká: An Indigenous Tribute to Killer Whales, which blends Alaska Native culture, science, and art to honor the enduring bond between killer whales and First Nations in the Pacific Northwest. Native educators/conservationists Odin Lonning (Tlingit) and Orca Annie Stateler (Choctaw/Five Tribes) integrate Tlingit regalia, song, dance, stories, natural history, and artwork to illuminate the killer whale’s spiritual and ecological significance in Northwest Coast Native cultures. It is an honor to have these two talented individuals attending our banquet to share their gifts. For more information about our guest presenters, visit: http://www.odinlonning.com/or http://www.vashonorcas.org.
Also for the banquet, plan to bring your own personal Artist Trading Cards to exchange with others attending the event. This is a fun new tradition, started two years ago at the Fort Kent conference in Maine. It is a great way to get to know new people and share in what we all love – our art! Recommended size for these cards is 3.5”x2.5”, and may be original art or prints sampling your work. To stimulate ideas, visit: http://www.artist-trading-cards.ch/.
