Justin Gibbens
Artist Bio

Justin Gibbens received his BA in painting and drawing from Central Washington University in 1998, a Scientific Illustration Certificate from University of Washington in 2003, and for a brief period traditional Chinese painting in Hefei, China. He is a founding member of PUNCH Gallery, an artist-run gallery located in Seattle, WA. Gibbens was the recipient of a 2006 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and a 2008 Artist Trust Fellowship Award. He has shown nationally and internationally and lives in rural Thorp, Washington. He is represented by G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle, WA and Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, OR. Thirty-some odd years ago when Justin first began moving graphite on paper he was rendering the boyhood standards: dinosaurs, creepy crawlers and other freakish fauna. And for over a decade, these images have made an interesting comeback within his work; again, he is drawing animals.By lifting the formal conventions of classic natural science illustration, Gibbens imagines legendary and diabolical beasts through the lens of a 19thcentury field artist.

Justin is exhibiting at the PUNCH gallery
119 Prefontaine Place South, Seattle, WA 98104
Hours: Thursday-Saturday noon—5pm
By appointment: art@punchgallery.org
