Julianna Bernado

Julianna Bernado was born in Maryland where she discovered their joy for art and their favorite medium: oil pastels. In 2008, their family relocated to Washington where she dabbled in creative writing, graphic design, and ceramics. Julianna studied Bioengineering in university and explored companion interests in the intersection of Gender, Globalization, and Empire. Julianna credits these additional explorations into social justice, imperial history, gender and racial relations as the most impactful influence on their worldview.

Currently, Julianna lives in Seattle, WA where she works in ecology and pairs her time outdoors with art to express the beauty of the natural world she experiences. She is completing a Certification in Natural Science Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. In addition, she is an artist with the non-profit Urban Artworks and has their own teaching artist practice inspiring youth and community to embrace intersectional environmental justice through creative art projects.

Julianna Bernado creates fine art paintings using a mixture of oil pastels, watercolors, ink, acrylic paint, and oil paints. Influenced by their scientific background, she draws most of their inspiration from complexities she sees in the natural world. Julianna finds answers to intense social questions in the wild and uses painting as the means to convey their conclusions. She has always been inspired by fauvists' use of bright color and sees a reflection of their saturation and beastly brush work in their oeuvre.
