with Dr. Linda Ann Vorobik, botanist and scientific illustrator, at the University of Washington Greenhouse
                                                January 15th, 2011, 10:30 AM-3:30 PM
Participants practiced botanical field sketching with pencil and watercolor. As well as helpful group critiques, and advice on techniques and supplies
from Dr. Vorobik, there was an informative tour of the facility with greenhouse staff, and a wide selection of interesting subjects from which to choose. We enjoyed a potluck lunch; the short business meeting included the election of chapter officers and a look at some possible chapter logos. From the Field to the Studio – A behind the scenes look at the artwork of Wildlife Artist Bart Rulon This colorful slide show features the award winning artwork and photography of local wildlife artist Bart Rulon (Whidbey Island, WA).  It’s a journey showing how Rulon creates his realistic paintings of wildlife, starting with the time he spends sketching and photographing wildlife in the field.  You’ll learn techniques Bart uses to research his subjects in the wild as you see pictures of wildlife taken from the vantage point of a kayak, and floating blind.  Bart will share stories about encounters with animals he’s had on some of these adventures.  Slides demonstrating the progression of several of his paintings will give you insight on the painting process in acrylic and watercolor.  Bart will share many of the techniques he’s learned the hard way over 20 years of being a professional wildlife artist.  Bart will be available for questions during and after his presentation, and he will bring along art instruction/photo reference books he has written for North Light Books that will be available for sale.

                                                ABOUT BART RULON
Bart Rulon lives and works on Whidbey Island in Washington State’s Puget Sound.  He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky in a self-made scientific illustration major.  He graduated with honors and became a full-time artist, focusing on wildlife subjects.

His research travels have taken him to new places every year including long trips to Africa, India, South America, and Alaska, and he has been all over the contiguous United States and Canada.  On many of these field trips he uses a sea kayak or a custom made floating blind as tools to experience the behaviors of wildlife up close.

Rulon is the author and illustrator of 5 books focused on painting and photographing birds, wildlife, and landscapes, all published by North Light Books. His paintings of birds are included in the permanent collections of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the Bennington Center for the Arts, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Rulon’s award winning paintings have been exhibited in many of the finest exhibitions, museums and galleries displaying wildlife and landscape art in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Japan, and England.  His paintings have been regularly included in prestigious exhibitions such as the Birds in Art exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the Society of Animal Artists’ annual exhibition Art and the Animal, the Arts for the Parks Top 100exhibition and national tour, the Art of the Animal Kingdom exhibit at the Bennington Center for the Arts, and the Natural Wonders exhibit at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

Rulon’s paintings have been featured on the cover and interior of many Bird Watcher’s Digestissues, including the cover of their special 25th anniversary issue.  His illustrations of birds appear in the field guides All the Birds of North America (HarperCollins, 1997), and A Guide to the Birds of the West Indies (Princeton University Press, 1998).  You can see more of his artwork at www.BartRulon.com.
