Presentation/Workshop Opportunity at High School and Urban Sketching Class

2/10/2014

Presentation/Workshop Opportunity

High school marine biology teacher, Bryan Robles, is interested in having a science illustrator present in his class.  The school is in Issaquah and you can contact him for more details ([email protected]).  I have done similar workshops/presentation in the past.  They were fun and a great way to exercise my teaching skills.

Urban Sketching Class

Take a sketching tour of your own backyard: visually explore Seattle's "secret" interior public spaces, eclectic architecture, and unsuspecting passers-by. You'll get practical tips in distilling often-overwhelming visual stimuli, improve your grasp of perspective and composition, and perhaps even discover a cool place you didn't know existed.  Find more information here.

GNSI NW Member Accomplishments - Cognition, Inc

Cognition, Inc. is looking forward to a move to a new office in mid-January. This will make it possible for our team room to grow in the coming years. Speaking of growth, we're fortunate to have added a gifted graphic designer, a super developer, and a talented certified medical illustrator/animator to our team. We also rounded out the 4Q13 with a brand new responsive website: www.cognitionstudio.com . Lastly, I will be teaching a workshop this summer at ICON8… likely something centered around medical illustration storytelling and knowledge transfer.

Workshop - Identifying Birds of the PNW - Feb, 15th 2014

There is still space in this workshop.  Dennis Paulson is a very knowledge ornithologist and I am sure all who attend will learn something new and have a great time.  I hope the weather is good.  Cross your fingers.

Member Dues - Feb 23rd

Member dues of $20 should be sent by Feb 23rd.

Payable to: GNSI NORTHWEST (GNSI-NW)

GNSI NORTHWEST
P.O. Box 95721
Seattle, WA 98145

Feel free to pay at the workshop on Feb 15th.

Still looking for a new President

I have settled into Pittsburgh, am enjoying the snow and discovering new floral and fauna.  Because of my move, GNSI NW is in need of a new president.  If you are interested, feel free to contact me.  If you are intimidated, so was I, but it has been easier than I thought and rewarding.  = )

Drawing on Nature: Flora and Fauna

presented by
The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators Northwest
and
The Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists

January 15 – April 1, 2014
Washington State Convention Center
The exhibit is displayed in the level 2 Hallway.

Picture
Please join The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators-Northwest Chapter (GNSI-NW) and The Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists (PNBA), a Chapter of the American Society of Botanical Artists, for the first time have combined their efforts to create this exhibition entitled “Drawing on Nature: Flora and Fauna”. The art selected for this exhibit was juried by a committee of professional artists and scientists in the Pacific Northwest. As the title suggests this exhibit includes a wide range of subjects from the natural world.

GNSI-NW and the PNBA are nonprofit organizations made up of professional and amateur artists dedicated to generating awareness of our surrounding ecosystems. PNBA’s focus is primarily on botanical illustrations, but may also show the symbiotic relationship of a plant with its habitat, insects or other wildlife. GNSI-NW has a broader perspective, which includes botanical, animal, and mineral subjects in various formats such as medical science and interpretive art.

The skills and techniques represented in the artwork in this exhibit will reflect hundreds of years of knowledge accumulated by artists who have studied and worked to master their media. Scientific illustration demands a complex understanding of process, techniques, tools, and subject matter in order to move beyond the skills to render a nice picture. The abilities of a science illustrator must also communicate to viewers a sense of appreciation and impart a more intimate knowledge of the subject and at the same time appeal to aesthetic principles.

Location - Trade Center Exhibition Space at 800 Convention Place, Seattle. WA

GNSI NW Creations and Accomplishments

Picture
We all work hard at creating beautiful and informative illustrations.  Please share your creations and accomplishments with the group.  Just email me and I can pop it onto the website.

Here you can see Véronique Robigou artistic rendering of Dr. Ian S.E. Charmichael's amazing academic legacy. This was published in the journal "Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology".
September 2013, Volume 166, Issue 3, pp 655-663.

New Members in 2013

We gained many new members in 2013.  I just want to say "welcome!"  I have created a few new profiles including Barbara Ierulli. If you want a page, email me your bio and a handful of images.  The images should be large enough to fill the space allotted on the screen.  Just about 9x9in.

Open for Enrollment! Identifying Birds of the PNW - Feb, 15th 2014

Learn more about February's workshop here.

The GNSI NW Presidency

As I have announced before, I will be moving out of the area.  My new home will officially be Pittsburgh, PA in January.  Buurrrrrrr.  This is far far from the PNW.

Therefore, an awesome opportunity to become president of GNSI NW will be available.  If you are interested, just email me at [email protected] for more details.  If you are intimated by the idea, so was I, but it was been great.
