Fiona MartinFiona Martin specializes in vector illustration, infographics, and layout design. She passionate the marine, climate, and earth sciences, public health, and education. At the age of 2, her parents discovered she had a significant hearing loss. Despite being almost deaf, she managed to adapt to a hearing world, attend public schools, and—out of necessity—learn the art of lip-reading. Fiona appreciates visual communication because it’s like a universal language—transcending barriers and facilitating understanding of complex ideas “at a glance”. She also likes finding beauty in overlooked and under-discovered things—the intricate weave of a feather, the iridescent cuticle of a marine algae, bioluminescent plankton on a night dive.
Fiona holds a BS in Marine Biology and a graduate certificate in Scientific Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has over 16 years of experience freelancing from her studio Visualizing Science, and also serves as a Senior Illustration Editor at Annual Reviews (a nonprofit publisher of scientific journals). Clients include the National Park Service, NOAA Climate.gov, MBARI, Princeton University Press, and more. Website: www.visualizingscience.com |
