Birds at the Burke

Thank you Alyssa, Katherine, and Terri for a wonderful day at the Burke Museum for "Bug Blast"!
The museum was thrilled by an attendance increase of 20% compared to last year's event.

And eagerly looks forward to GNSI-NW participation for "Birds at the Burke" on Saturday, October 10 2015.

  • Interact with a public of all ages and share/demonstrate illustration skills using selected museum’s specimen.
  • Taking down the scientific illustration/booth at 4 pm

PNBA 8th ANNUAL ELISABETH C. MILLER LIBRARY EXHIBIT AND SALE

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, CENTER FOR URBAN HORTICULTURE

Friday, April 3 to Saturday, May 2, 2015

 WHO:            
Members of the PNBA are invited to supply art and inventory for this exhibit and two sales: one in conjunction with the library’s annual book sale on April 3 & 4, the other during the Master Gardener annual plant sale on May 2 & 3.

Note: GNSI members are welcome to participate. GNSI members are required to pay an entry fee of $10.00, payable to PNBA. Please include a check with the Art & Inventory Registration Form.

 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
Volunteers are needed to assist with:
·       Receiving and hanging artwork on Thursday, April 2.
·       Staffing the sales table at the book sale on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4.
·       Setting up the booth at the Master Gardener plant sale on Friday, May 1.
·       Staffing the sales table at the Master Gardener plant sale on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.
·       Taking down the exhibit artwork on Monday, May 4.

Ever wanted to touch a bat? Or get close to a tiger? Meet hundreds of specimens from the Burke Museum’s extraordinary mammalogy collection.

Meet the Mammals is the only opportunity of the year for visitors to see hundreds of specimens from the mammalogy collection on display. There will be hands-on activities for the whole family; many of the specimens can be held or touched. Mammal experts are on hand all day long to answer questions and talk about the amazing diversity of mammals!

Birds at the Burke
Saturday, October 18, 10 AM – 4PM
Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture

Flock to the Burke for a fabulous day filled with all things feathered! Discover more about the birds in your backyard and around the world with the Burke’s ornithology collection and visit live birds on the Burke lawn. Explore the museum with a unique indoor bird watching experience and afterwards make your own bird feeder! Information will be available for birders of all ages and experience.

Special programs:
  • Get “up-close and personal” with owls, hawks and eagles during live bird shows with Yakima’s Raptor House Rehab Center at 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM, and 2:30 PM. 
  • Revel in the beauty of owls and woodpeckers with two talks by award-winning photographer and author Paul Bannick. Venture into the secret lives of owls at 11:30 a.m. and learn more about North America's woodpeckers at 1:30 p.m.
All-day activities:
  • Examine hundreds of bird specimens, including rare and delicate bird’s eggs with their nests.
  • Make your own bird feeder and more hands-on activities.
  • Learn the basics of birding during a special indoor bird watching experience.
  • View Burke collections of Owls, Penguins, Woodpeckers and other specimens.
  • Learn how you can be involved with Citizen Science Projects.
  • Watch as scientists prepare birds for research.


Information for birders of all ages and experience levels will be provided by the Burke Museum Ornithology team along with our community partners--Seattle Audubon, Seward Park Audubon, Puget Sound Bird Observatory, and the Washington Ornithological Society. Birds at the Burke is made possible by a generous gift from Robert and Mary Louise Barden, passionate birders and friends of the Burke Museum.
