GNSI NW Member Accomplishments - Cognition, IncCognition, Inc. is looking forward to a move to a new office in mid-January. This will make it possible for our team room to grow in the coming years. Speaking of growth, we're fortunate to have added a gifted graphic designer, a super developer, and a talented certified medical illustrator/animator to our team. We also rounded out the 4Q13 with a brand new responsive website: www.cognitionstudio.com . Lastly, I will be teaching a workshop this summer at ICON8… likely something centered around medical illustration storytelling and knowledge transfer. Workshop - Identifying Birds of the PNW - Feb, 15th 2014There is still space in this workshop. Dennis Paulson is a very knowledge ornithologist and I am sure all who attend will learn something new and have a great time. I hope the weather is good. Cross your fingers. Member Dues - Feb 23rdMember dues of $20 should be sent by Feb 23rd. Payable to: GNSI NORTHWEST (GNSI-NW) GNSI NORTHWEST P.O. Box 95721 Seattle, WA 98145 Feel free to pay at the workshop on Feb 15th. Still looking for a new PresidentI have settled into Pittsburgh, am enjoying the snow and discovering new floral and fauna. Because of my move, GNSI NW is in need of a new president. If you are interested, feel free to contact me. If you are intimidated, so was I, but it has been easier than I thought and rewarding. = ) Drawing on Nature: Flora and Fauna Please join The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators-Northwest Chapter (GNSI-NW) and The Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists (PNBA), a Chapter of the American Society of Botanical Artists, for the first time have combined their efforts to create this exhibition entitled “Drawing on Nature: Flora and Fauna”. The art selected for this exhibit was juried by a committee of professional artists and scientists in the Pacific Northwest. As the title suggests this exhibit includes a wide range of subjects from the natural world. GNSI-NW and the PNBA are nonprofit organizations made up of professional and amateur artists dedicated to generating awareness of our surrounding ecosystems. PNBA’s focus is primarily on botanical illustrations, but may also show the symbiotic relationship of a plant with its habitat, insects or other wildlife. GNSI-NW has a broader perspective, which includes botanical, animal, and mineral subjects in various formats such as medical science and interpretive art. The skills and techniques represented in the artwork in this exhibit will reflect hundreds of years of knowledge accumulated by artists who have studied and worked to master their media. Scientific illustration demands a complex understanding of process, techniques, tools, and subject matter in order to move beyond the skills to render a nice picture. The abilities of a science illustrator must also communicate to viewers a sense of appreciation and impart a more intimate knowledge of the subject and at the same time appeal to aesthetic principles. Location - Trade Center Exhibition Space at 800 Convention Place, Seattle. WA

The museum has skins, wings, skeletons, and eggs of just about all Pacific Northwest birds, so feel free to make requests. There should be a variety of waterfowl (wigeons, scoters, mergansers, Buffleheads), gulls and other seabirds (grebes, guillemots) and as many small land birds (sparrows, wrens, thrushes) as we can find in the woods there.
